This scenic painting is based on Gurbani stressing the importance of Lord’s name in leading a truthful, righteous life.
In the Painting, an old man is going. The road leading to his destination is long full of hurdles, ups and downs. Sometimes the person may feel tired and have some rest for a while. Again he continues the journey. The journey is symbolic of the journey of life and the destination is the final union of the soul with the God Almighty. On the way, the person has to face many ups and downs ( ਿਜਹ ਪੈਡੈ ਮਹਾ ਅੰਧ ਗੁਬਾਰਾ ॥).
But Gurbani serves as the light house in the journey of life. As the ship is able to see the direction clearly, the person is also able to exercise control on these vices present in him. God’s name enlightens the mind and leads the person to his destination i.e. union of the soul with the God.
The old man has a string of beads in one hand symbolizing the Guru’s name. It lightens the path ( ਹਿਰ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਿਗ ਉਜੀਆਰਾ ॥) and the person is able to go through the life’s duties with courage. He can win over the vices with the grace of God and can be saved from the cycle of birth and death. As a swan (Murgai) swims in the water yet keeps its feathers dry. It is not affected by the water. Similarly, a person can sail through this life i.e he will lead a householder’s life and remain detached from the worldly attractions.
The person has to go alone and has to complete the journey of life full of ups and downs. Final destination is union of soul with God. Without guidance of Naam the journey of life becomes uneasy and distracted in the darkness of the five vices.
The journey of life is full of troubles, where no one knows what is going to happen in the next moment. The person has to go alone. The world is also full of so many attractions. Lust, Anger, Greed, Love and Ego also lead the person astray.
